When Alex first reached out about her engagement photos in Dallas, she didn’t talk about poses, Pinterest boards, or recreating something she’d seen a hundred times before. She talked about feeling. She said she loved how my work felt classic, timeless, and candid.

There’s trust in that approach. Choosing a photographer because of how their work makes you feel, not just how it looks, means you’re willing to let go a little. Not completely (you’re still human, of course), but enough to be present. Alex made it clear she didn’t want a day full of direction or constant posing. She just wanted to enjoy her time with Mitchel and let the photos happen alongside it. This is usually where the best moments live anyway. When people aren’t performing, they soften. They lean in without thinking about it. They laugh in a way that doesn’t ask for approval. That’s where the “editorial” side sneaks in naturally, without forcing it.

So we built the session around that. Choosing spaces that allowed them to move freely and to exist without interruption. The goal all along was to create something that feels like them, even years from now, when everything else has shifted just a little.

Moody, Romantic Speakeasy Engagement Pictures at Ginger’s Bar

Alex told me she wanted something moody and intimate, somewhere that felt a little tucked away from the world. I suggested Ginger’s because I’d shot there before, and I knew it would hold that energy she was looking for. She saw it and immediately connected with the low light and rich textures.

Once we were there, everything settled into place naturally. There’s something about a darker environment that invites people to lean closer, speak a little quieter, and exist in their own little pocket of the world. Alex wanted romantic, but also a little editorial. And those two things don’t have to compete. When you’re paying attention, you start to see how naturally they overlap. Ginger’s didn’t need us to do much. It just asked us to slow down. And thankfully, Alex was already the kind of person who knew how to do that.

Golden Hour Engagement Photos in Downtown Dallas

After Ginger’s, we stepped back out into the city to grab some golden hour light. Downtown Dallas in late September has a way of holding on to warmth just a little longer than necessary. It’s not subtle about it either. But that evening, it felt just right.

We wandered a bit, then we made our way up to a rooftop parking lot, because nothing says romance like concrete and skyline views, obviously. But really, it’s the contrast that makes it work. They brought pizza and champagne, which felt very on-brand for people who understand that the best moments don’t need to be complicated.

This is where things shifted into a more playful vibe. But there was still a subtle sexiness that showed up on that rooftop. We ended the night where the light fades. We let the day land where it wanted to. And it landed somewhere really good.
